The Somerville Public Library offers the following variation on the usual methods of getting a library card, specifically for high school students over the age of 13, who have both photo ID and proof of residence (such as a class schedule, either paper or virtual) and whose teachers are acting as official school/library liaisons. In these cases, both of the following must apply:
- the teacher is part of the city of Somerville School System
- the teacher has contacted the Teen Services Librarian beforehand
After arranging a future class visit with the Teen librarian, the teacher collects in advance Teacher/Liaison Applications for Students (High School/ ESL) from the library. Alternatively, the teacher may print out the application form found here. The students fill out these applications in the teacher’s classroom and return them to the teacher (not to the Library). Then, the teacher gives all the completed applications to the Teen librarian at least two days before the class is scheduled to visit the library. The Teen librarian gives the applications to the Circulation Department, which processes the applications and writes the students names on the card-covers. The cards are held until the students come as a class to the Library to pick them up.
NOTE: If the student already has a library card on file and has accrued fines on items from other Minuteman libraries we will be unable to process their new application.
