Get Student Library Cards at Class Visits

Minuteman library cards, wallet and key chain sizes

In the spirit of cooperation with our educators, the Somerville Public Library offers the following variation on the usual methods of getting a library card, specifically for high school students over the age of 13, who have both photo IDs and proof of residence (for example, schedules) and whose teachers are acting as official school/library liaisons. In these cases, both of the following must apply:

  • the teacher is part of the city of Somerville School System
  • the teacher has contacted the Teen Services Librarian beforehand

After arranging a future class visit with the liaison librarian, the teacher collects in advance Teacher/Liaison Applications for Students (High School/ ESL) from the library liaison.  Alternatively, the teacher may print out the application form found here. The students fill out these applications in the teacher’s classroom and return them to the teacher (not to the Library).  Then, the teacher gives all the completed applications to the liaison librarian at least two days before the next class visit.  The liaison librarian promptly gives the applications to the Circulation Department.  Circulation processes the applications and writes the patron names on the card-covers.  The cards are held until the students come as a class to the Library to pick them up.

NOTE:  If the student already has a card on file, and it is delinquent due to overdue materials or fines accrued on items from other Minuteman libraries, the newly submitted card application will not be processed.  There can be no exceptions to this rule.
