What Happens During the Interview?

  • The officer will go through all 4 parts of the US Citizenship Interview:
    • Reading
    • Writing
    • 100 Civics Questions
    • N-400 Questions

  • If you pass all 4 sections of the interview, the officer will recommend your application for approval and your Naturalization Ceremony will be scheduled.

  • If you fail any portion of the interview, you will be scheduled for a retake within 60-90 days. You only will have to retake the section or sections you failed, not the entire interview. For example, if you did not pass the Civics portion, you will only need to retake the Civics portion.

  • When your Naturalization Ceremony is scheduled, you will receive a letter in the mail with a date, time, and location of your ceremony. In some cases due to COVID-19, Naturalization Ceremonies have taken place immediately after the interview is finished. This is based on logistics at USCIS field offices.

  • During the Naturalization Ceremony, you will take the Oath of Allegiance and receive your Certificate of Naturalization. Now you are officially a US Citizen!
