baby animalsrelaxationExam Week Events: De-stress and Celebrate at the Central Library!

Animal Affair Petting Zoo: NEW TIME! Monday, June 13th, 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. High School students are invited to chill out on the library lawn with baby farm animals from Animal Affair! Pet, brush, and feed baby goats, baby bunnies, piglets, and Silkie chickens. There may also be chicks, ducklings, adult ducks and rabbits, and a lamb.

Relaxation Café for Exam-Frazzled Teens: Tuesday, June 14th, 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Final exams stressing you out? We've got the cure! Stop by to make your own de-stress toy, color, listen to relaxing music, and sip some calming herbal tea...ahhhh...

Lawn Games: Wednesday, June 15th, 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. When finals are over it's time to play! Come on over to the lawn between the high school and the library for cornhole, dodge tag (that thing where everyone wears velcro vests  and throws tennis balls at each other), Twister, giant checkers, Frisbee, and more!

2022 Summer Reading Challenge: Read Beyond the Beaten Path at the Central Library, the East Branch, and the West Branch (The Massachusetts Statewide Summer Library Program is funded by the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners)

  • Sign up begins on June 12th.  Come into any Somerville Library to get your sign-up swag: bookmarks, buttons, cool vinyl stickers, and most important, a blank book review form.
  • You can submit book reviews beginning on June 21st. You’ll get a Make Your Own S’mores kit when you submit your first review. For each review you submit after the first one you’ll get a vinyl sticker and an entry for a chance to win the Grand Prize - a Polaroid Camera and film! More reviews = more chances to win!
  •  The Grand Prize winner will be announced on August 22nd at 6:30 p.m. on the lawn at the Central Library. We'll also have games, popsicles, and a tie-dye craft.

Read the Rainbow Book Club: 3 Thursday evenings, 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. (June 9th, July 14th, & August 11th) at the Central Librarypride flag

Read the Rainbow is a book club for teens that features books with stories starring LGBTQIA+ main characters. Teens of all identities are encouraged to join. RtR is a reader's choice book group, so feel free to bring in any LGBTQIA+ book you've recently enjoyed to talk about! To help narrow down the discussion, each month's meeting will have a theme: June is romantic comedy, July is spooky stories, and August is international settings. No registration is required.

Join New York Times bestselling author Kayla Cottingham (My Dearest Darkest) and acclaimed author Regina Hansen (The Coming Storm) as they discuss the process of writing and publishing a novel. Both books are available through the Minuteman Library Network -- but you don't need to read them to attend!

Hang out and play multi-player Nintendo Switch games on the big screen! Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8, Rocket League...or bring your own games! Recommended for ages 12-18.

West Branch T(w)een Advisory Board Monday, July 18th, 6:30 p.m. at the West Branchtweens & teens

The West Branch T(w)een Advisory Board includes reading, book discussions, and other library activities for tweens and teens 11 and up. Registraton is required.

Soul Family Movie Night on the Lawn: Soul Wedesday, August 17th, 7:30 p.m. at the Central Library

Bring blankets or lawn chairs, a picnic dinner or snacks, and definitely bring your friends and family for a summertime classic - an outdoor movie! This time we're showing Pixar's Soul, the story of how New York City jazz pianist Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx) tries to reunite his separated soul and body before his big break. One critic says, "an absolute delight. It will make any viewer cherish the life they have and want to live it more fully, every single day, ideally with lots of laughs along the way."
