Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the enduringly popular and influential author Charles Dickens.
For students who are just getting to know Dickens, School Library Journal has a good article that includes a bibliography of materials and websites for a variety of age groups.
Dickens 2012 gives details of Dickens-anniversary celebrations that are taking place all over the world throughout the year. For example, today is the British Council's global 24-hour read-a-thon, a read-aloud extravaganza with participants from China, Russia, Albania, Pakistan, and twenty other countries reading excerpts from Dickens novels.
As for us, we're planning a Dickens event as well - a presentation by Albert Cremin of chapters of his one-man show, Introducing Mr. Charles Dickens. The show will take place at the Central Library on Sunday, February 19th at 2:30 p.m. - save the date! You can read more about it here.
Links to full-text online versions of Dickens's works can be found here and the Library's holdings of Dickens items can be found here. Happy reading - and happy birthday, beloved author!
