There are a number of resources for English Language Learning and Teaching through the Somerville Public Library:

A great collection of English Language Learning materials including workbooks, leveled readers, and CDs in the following areas: Grammar, Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Pronunciation, Citizenship, Lifeskills, Idioms, TOEFL, and IELTS.

English Language Teaching materials are also available including teaching English online, teaching content to English Learners, and incorporating culture into the classroom.


News for You logo

News for You offers easy-to-read news stories that can help you learn to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Seven new stories are posted each Wednesday, along with audio, exercises, vocabulary, a crossword puzzle, a word search, and a poll. Listen to each story in full or sentence-by-sentence.

A "language lab" type database (Mango Languages) that you can use at home through your computer to learn and practice English.


The Mango Languages database offers language training and practice for English for Speakers of Other Languages.

To access the database:

  • Click on the Mango Languages picture above, then click "Guest Access" to create a profile. 
  • On the next page, there will be a list of languages. 
  • Click on English (or any other language you would like to learn), then choose your native language to begin your lessons.  For example, if you speak Portuguese, you will choose "English for Portuguese Speakers".
