City-Wide Scavenger Hunt - Starting September 22nd through October 22nd

Ready to play detective and get out into the community? Then join us for our citywide Somerville Reads Scavenger Hunt! 

Starting September 22, the libraries will begin distributing clue sheets at all of our locations. Stop by to pick one up to start the hunt! As you solve clues around the city, you'll be able to earn points towards our Scavenger Hunt raffle, which will feature prizes from great local organizations like All She Wrote Books, Remnant Brewing, Boston Bouldering Company, and many more. You'll have one month to solve as many clues as possible!

Death Cafe at the East Branch - Thursday, September 29th at 7pm

Death Cafes are a group-directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes, with the objective of increasing awareness of death and helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.

The SPL will be hosting the East Branch Death Cafe with Alan Bingham, a retired hospice and palliative care executive who has spent many hours with terminal patients and their families. Please join us on Thursday Sept 29th at 7pm at the East Branch.

Children's Room Scavenger Hunt - Starting October 11th through October 22nd. 

After finding all the ghosts hidden in in the Central Library Children's Room, kids will have to solve the answer to the riddle coded on the backs of each ghost! We will draw from all the completed entries on Monday, Oct 24 and the winner will receive a $20 gift card to All She Wrote Books. 

Edgar Allan Poe Grown Up Story Time at Aeronaut Brewery - Thursday, October 13th at 7pm

Join the Somerville Public Library at Aeronaut Brewery for a special Grown Up Story Time event - themed around Edgar Allan Poe's short stories and poems!

Volunteers will be selected prior to the event to read some of the classic Poe works.

Teens and tweens are invited to explore Ouija board, tarot, astrology, tea leaf reading, and more!

Researching Your Family History: Genealogy 101 - Wednesday, October 19th at 7pm

Are you curious about your family’s history? Are you not sure where to get started? Join the SPL's Local History Librarian, Kevin O’Kelly, for an introduction to genealogy research. He’ll present some basic strategies and principles in researching historical materials and teach you about resources available from the Somerville Public Library and the federal government as well other Internet resources.

Library Costume Party - Saturday, October 22nd at 5pm

Celebrate Somerville Reads and the fall season at this after-hours costume party held throughout the Central Library! 

All ages are welcome to join in the fun, including a costume contest, face painting, selfie stations, indoor cornhole, karaoke, refreshments and more!
