Comix Con 2023 Events
On May 20, 2023, the Somerville Public Library is excited to host its third annual library-wide ComixCon, a free event for all members of the community. Register before the event for updates and to earn a limited edition button to start earning tickets for our raffle. We'll be offering the following events:
Stage Combat
Fights that look dangerous and dynamic on stage and screen are carefully choreographed for safety and visuals. Find out how from Chris Cardoni, actor and fight choreographer. He’ll be demonstrating, answering questions, and bringing a variety of prop weapons for people to see and hold.
Cosplay
Join local cosplayers MakeUpMermaidCosplay and Katie Hagerty to learn more about how they got into cosplay, what it takes to make costumes and how you can get involved.
Magic the Gathering
Come make friends and battle it out to be the best planeswalker at the library while learning the popular trading card game Magic the Gathering. This intro lesson will teach basic mechanics and gameplay to new or lapsed players. Thanks to a generous donation, the first 10 participants will receive introductory decks that they can keep; additional kits will be available to borrow for the duration of the program.
Lightsaber Combat
This program teaches the skills needed to be a successful space warrior: mindful breathing and movement for focus and power, and simple yet epic-movie-worthy “laser sword” choreography. This fun & active session for all ages is led by our fully costumed Space General, the professional stage & film actor and fight choreographer J.T. Turner. No equipment or special skills needed; participants may use our light sabers*, purely imaginary “laser swords,” or cardboard wrapping paper tubes for practice.
Paint DnD Miniatures
Paint a miniature version of a Dungeons and Dragons character! For this drop-in program, the library will provide DnD minis, paint, and brushes for you to bring your character to life. Enjoy screenings of mini painting content to inspire your creation! Open to ages 10 and up; one miniature per participant while supplies last.
Comic Strip Workshop
Come learn how to make your own comic strip with Pet Peeves Comic! You’ll learn the methods behind creating comic strips and leave with your very own by the end of the workshop. No artistic ability required!
Costumed Character Meet and Greet
Enjoy a lively and interactive meet and greet with special guests Spider-Man and Wonder Woman! There will be singing, dancing and a chance to get your picture taken with a superhero!
Rebel Legion
Get ready for an appearance by visitors from a galaxy far far away with members of the Rebel Legion’s Alderaan Base. Your favorite Star Wars characters will be here starting at 10AM for an interactive face-to-face experience!
Comic Crafts
In celebration of all things geeky, we'll be offering crafts for adults, teens, and kids. Kids will make paper bag monsters, teens will learn how to make marble magnets, and adults can try their hand at making comic collage picture frames.
Comix Con 2023 is proudly supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Friends of the Somerville Pubic Library.
