PHAROS instructions:
At the queue station you can sign up for an internet computer.
-
At
the queue station (which is like an "index" machine
that assigns you to a particular computer), move the mouse or
press "enter" on the keyboard to make the Pharos cover
screen go away and give you the library card number sign-in screen.
- Enter into the sign-in field the 14 digit number which is on the
back of your library card under the bar code. Use no spaces between
the numbers when entering it.
- If there are computers free, the next screen will give you a computer
number assignment (all the internet computers have numbers attached
to the monitors). Click "Finished" on the queue screen,
and go to the numbered computer assigned to you.
- If there are no computers free (all in use by other people), the
next screen will not give you a computer number assignment, but
instead just say "internet PC" and give you a time to
check back on this queue station to check your status. The queue
station tries to estimate how long existing users will stay on,
when they will get off, etc. and gives you a check-back time to
see if you have been assigned a computer yet. Unfortunately, this
automated projection is difficult to make and not necessarily accurate,
so you may find that you have to check back a couple of times because
you may be given new check-back times each time you check in. You
may also find that the check back time may almost just be the time
it already is right now.
- The computer assigned to you should have your name and/or library
card number on the screen. Press the "enter" button on
the keyboard to get the next screen, which will give you a library
card number sign-in screen.
- Enter your 14 digit card number into the sign-in field again,
exactly as you did on the queue station (no spaces between the numbers).
Press the "num lock" key to turn on the number keypad
if you are trying to enter the numbers using this keypad and nothing
is typing in the log-in box. The computers turn off the num lock
key when they log off and on with each new user, and the num lock
needs to be toggled on again.
-
A
box will appear at the top of the screen telling you which computer
you have been assigned to and what time it will be available.
-
Make
sure to click the "finished" button.
LATER - If you choose this oiption, you can sign up to use
a computer later that day or for a time on the following day. Please
note that only one reservation can be made at a time.
-
Click
"later."
-
A
calendar will appear. Choose "today" or the "following
day."
-
At
the next screen, choose the time you would like to begin.
-
Click
"done." A box will appear at the top of the screen telling
you which computer you have been assigned to and what time.
-
Make
sure to click the "finished" button.
You will not be able to select a particular computer to use when
signing in at the queue station. To sign up for a specific computer
when you are in the library, please see a librarian at the reference
desk.
You may sign up for the Internet by phone. You must have
a library card to do this. You may sign up for a specific computer
when making a phone reservation.
Internet use will be limited to 2 hours a day, but you may only
sign up for 1 hour at a time.
Internet reservations will be held for 5 minutes.
Near the end of your session, you will be given two warnings that
your time is about to expire: the first, 10 minutes before the end;
the second, 2 minutes before the end.
Before your session is over, you will be given an option to extend
your time by 15 minutes. This option will be available only if no
one else is waiting to use a computer and if you have not reached
your two-hour a day limit. Please be aware that the extension of
time of 15 minutes may be cut short if the computer sign-up station
becomes busy. If that occurs, you will be given a two minute warning
to log off.
When you are finished using the computer:
-
Click
the "start" button at the lower left-hand corner of
the screen
-
Click
the "log off public" button
-
Click
"okay"
OR,
if no "log off public" button:
-
Choose
"shut down"
-
Click
the arrow on the drop down menu and choose "log off"
-
Click
"okay"
If you have questions, please ask a librarian - we are happy to
help you!
